Synopsis

On Oa, a voice intones “Find him.  Find Kyle Rayner.”  In Highway Mill, New Mexico, Kyle Rayner’s rings warns him:  “Parallax is coming.”  In Northern California at the Ferris Aircraft field, Hal Jordan and Carol Ferris reminisce about the time they first met as kids.  While holding his father’s bomber jacket, Hal watched his father crash a jet plane and die.  Hal vowed he would never let go of his father’s jacket.  In the present, Hal laments he is not been himself and that he needs to find a way back.  At the watchtower, Oliver Queen (aka Green Arrow) and John Stewart (aka Green Lantern) quietly discuss Hal and the ring left in Ollie’s care.  Back at Ferris Aircraft, Carol tells Hal she is married.  Hal is happy for her.  Just then the JLA arrives thanks to Zatanna.  As the JLA questions Hal, John Stewart unleashes the power of his ring on Superman and the JLA.  Hal Jordan wants to help but the Spectre refuses.  Back at the Watchtower, Green Arrow watches as the “emergency” ring suddenly duplicates itself and finds its way to Guy Gardner, complete in his old Green Lantern outfit. In New Mexico, Kilowog appears and attacks Kyle Rayner.  Suddenly a voice demands they stop, and Ganthet, the last surviving Guardian of the Universe, stands over Hal Jordan’s body in the space ship!

Review

I would have liked to have read more about Hal’s relationship with Carol.  Their conversation was touching and revealed a lot about the two people.  However, I’m not really sure if anything could have been cut out of the story.  All of the various bits and pieces seem integral to the plot, at least to this point.  I’m not quite sure where Kilowog came from or where he had been (I though he was dead.  Why didn’t he die like the others?).  And since Kyle’s ship burst out from the sun, how did Hal’s body (and the coffin for that matter) manage to not burn up?  Ahh, questions, that I’m sure will be addressed.  I have faith in Geoff Johns.

I got a good laugh out of the duplicate ring landing on Guy’s middle finger.  It seemed appropriate for his character.  And as much as I like his Green Lantern look, Kyle still has the best outfit. -- MRB
