Synopsis
In Coast City, William Hand is intrigued by a corpse in his family’s mortuary. At Edwards Air Force Base, Hector Hammond uses telekinesis to attack Hal Jordan because he is scared Jordan wants Carol Ferris. Jordan tries to fight back with little success. He is saved by Sinestro. Elsewhere, Atrocitus builds a device to help him find William Hand. Meanwhile, Jordan and Sinestro visit the grave of Abin Sur. Suddenly, a hologram of Abin Sur appears as he leaves a message for Sinestro: he tells them of the Manhunters and the coming of the blackness. Later, Atrocitus finds William Hand, but Sinestro and Jordan find Atrocitus. In the fight, Atrocitus drains the green powers ring, forcing Sinestro and Jordan to fight without their weapons.

This issue is less about the origin of Hal Jordan and more about the upcoming Blackest Night story, which is both a good thing and a bad thing. On the one hand, previous installments had been leading in that direction anyway with hints and teases, so it is nice to see it payoff here. This issue finally tackles it head on with Abin’s warning and Atrocitus finally finding the one who finds the Black Battery in DC Universe #0 (and creating the device the Black Hand would use to drain the power rings). It is amazing how well Johns manages to intermix the future story and the past story to create what basically amounts to the backstory of the Blackest Night plot. It is a deft juggling act, but it works, especially the bits about Atorcitus and his rage at what the Manhunters had done to his world. On the other hand, for Johns to add in the Blackest Night material to this story, it means other elements of Jordan’s origin that need to be edited out or pushed aside. And there are some good moments in this issue that don’t get enough space. For the brief moment the two were talking, I loved the conversation between Sinestro and Jordan and I would’ve liked to have seen more. Hopefully we’ll get it in the next issue.
I wonder, based on this issue, if Johns is setting Sinestro for some sort of redemption. Is it possible that Johns is going to paint Sinestro as someone who purposely turned his back on the Green Lanterns and formed the Sinestro Corps as way to help defeat the upcoming darkness?
