Synopsis
On Earth, in Coast City, Jim Jordan is scared because no one has come to live in the rebuilt city. On the Planet Qward, Hal Jordan and other green lanterns are battling Lyssa Drak, the keeper of the book of Parallax, in order to free John Stewart and Guy Gardner. On Oa, the Guardians decide the best way to fight the Sinestro Corps is to rewrite the Book of Oa. When Ganthet and Sayd object, the rest of the Guardians banish them from the council. On Qward, Jordan leads the others, including the Lost Lanterns, who have found Ion, out of Qward. All of the Lanterns then retreat back to Oa while Hal decides to return to Earth, along with John and Guy, for back-up. Meanwhile, the Book of Oa has been re-written to allow for lethal force against the Sinestro Corps. But the Guardians have amassed the Corps in the wrong place. Sinestro doesn’t want the center of the universe, they want the center of the multiverse: Earth.
Review by Binkley (e-mail)
If someone were to ask me if I complained more about comic books having very little content, or decompression, or too much content, I would naturally state the former. In fact, I often praise writers who can deliver a lot of content in one issue. And, yes, for this particular issue, I must praise Johns for such a wild, crazy ride he has thrown into this storyline. But, I must be the beggar on the beach of gold and complain that for as much action and plot that are crammed into this issue, I wish there were more pages to deal with this story. I would have loved to see the throw down between the Lost Lanterns and the Anti-Monitor that enabled them to secure Ion. I would have loved to see more of Hal with the yellow rings against Sinestro and Amon Sur. I would have loved to see Guy and John do more than the little we saw. Everything in this issue just barrels past the reader at an alarming rate, but all of it is such freaking good stuff. And frankly, I think Johns could have added so much more without losing anything off of the kinetic pace.
The best parts of the story are not the action, which Reis and Albert draw with verve and style, but the way Johns shows how fear is guiding everyone’s actions, including the Guardians. They accuse Ganthet and Sayd of giving into lust for each other, but at the same time they are so afraid of Sinestro, that they willingly re-write the Book of Oa. Plus, we also get, via narrative boxes, what Hal Jordan is truly afraid of. These scenes are balanced neatly by the inclusion of Jim Jordan and his daughter’s nightmare of Hal possibly killing someone, which is something that may very well become reality given what the Guardians just attempted to do.
