Synopsis

In Chechnya, Hal Jordan is searching for Captain Jillian “Cowgirl” Pearlman who was captured after her plan was shot down.  While searching for her, Hal was attacked by bounty hunters looking to collect the price on his head, Rocket Reds looking to clear Hal out their country, and the Justice League looking to take him back home.  While the league deals with the Rocket Reds, Hal attempts to clear out to find Cowgirl.  Alan Scott (the original Green Lantern) stops him, but Hal explains the situation and continues his search.  Elsewhere, Amon Sur invades Edwards Air Force to steal Hal’s ship.  Meanwhile, just as Hal finds Cowgirl, Hal is attacked by Hunger Dog, who knocks Hal unconscious.  When he awakens, he is being held at gunpoint by Amon Sur.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

The good news with this issue is that the story is tight and focused and we finally get to see Amon Sur and Hal Jordan facing each other, albeit at the very end.  The bad news is that Hal once more takes a back seat to other characters in the book, this time the Justice League and Alan Scott.  Not that I am complaining.  The scenes with the Justice League were handled real well; it was great to see them working so well together and being able to easily handle the Rocket Reds, who should not be a threat at all to the big guns of the Justice League.  But, those scenes took away from Hal.  This is becoming, unfortunately, a common thread in this book; Johns tosses so much into the mix, Hal just gets lost in the background.

The most interesting moments in this particular issue were the short encounters between Hal and Alan and between Hal and Cowgirl.  However, the conversation with Alan was truncated and a little clumsy.  Alan’s summation of Hal’s state of mind, comparing Carol to Cowgirl, seemed rushed, almost forced, as if Johns just didn’t have the space to write more.  Of course, the Dominator’s appearance, which was pretty much worthless, could have easily been cut and it would not have been noticeable, but that is just me.  The other encounter I liked was the final bit with Cowgirl.  It seemed as if she recognized Hal underneath the mask and it certainly looked as if Hal’s feelings were about to be known to her.  And then we get the quick cut.  In this case, I can see where Johns was going with this, so I can understand the brevity of the scene.
