Synopsis
Inside the walled portion of Star City, nicknamed the Everglades, Danny Brickwell (aka Brick) is protecting his city against street thugs. Meanwhile, Green Arrow has Slade Wilson (aka Deathstroke) surrounded by the National Guard. He wants to know what Deathstroke will do. Deathstroke drops his weapon and decides to surrender. Green Arrow is not happy. He was hoping Deathstroke would get away so the National Guard could shoot him a couple of times. The next morning, Mayor Queen’s aid Tuckman questions Ollie about the cost to set-up Deathstroke. Tuckman wants to know if Ollie was brought of a stock scam that may have netted Ollie millions of dollars. He thought Ollie wanted to save the city. Ollie tells him he does, but he must think of the big picture. Just then they receive photos of Brick fighting thugs in the glades. Green Arrow comes to help. They are able to take down a couple of thugs, but one calls out to his friends....
Review by Binkley (e-mail)
This was really a transition issue from the Deathstroke story to the new Brick story. I gotta hope that this whole deal with the surrender of Deathstroke leads someplace because otherwise those pages were essentially a waste of time and space. The ending with Brick is the beginning of a new story arc, but his presence in the glades (as it is called) has been shown on a couple of occasions in previous issues, so it is about time Winick got around to him. Neither bits about Deathstroke and Brick were all that interesting, at least for this issue. The most interesting part is the accusation of Tuckman that Ollie had been part of an illegal stock scheme and that Oliver Queen is worth billions now. I wonder if he has more than Bruce Wayne. Regardless, I like the way it shows a negative side to Oliver Queen, although we know that if true he is going to use the money to help his beloved Star City.
The good news is that the political soapbox that seemed to be so prevalent a couple of issues ago has almost disappeared; the bad news is the Ollie has Mayor story has kind of ground to halt and does not seem to be getting anywhere. Winick has provided hints and clues that there is something more going on that simply Ollie becoming Mayor just to tear down the wall or help restore Star City, but frankly if Winick doesn’t get to the point soon he may lose me.
