Synopsis

After thwarting terrorists on the wall in the middle of Star City, Mayor Oliver Queen (aka Green Arrow) returned to find Slade Wilson (aka Deathstroke) waiting for him.  Slade pops a tranquilizer dart into Ollie’s aide and then into Ollie’s chest.  Slade was contracted to kill Ollie, but Slade’s thinking he is going to go for something more sadistic.  Ollie, however, has other plans.  He activates a bomb that sends Slade flying and then reveals he was body armor.  He then uses a very big trick arrow to send Slade into a deep pit filled with adhesive.  Ollie withdraws his own sword and fights with Slade, who realizes that Ollie has gotten better.  Slade attempts to leave the pit, but realizes he is completely surrounded by the National Guard.  Ollie tells Slade:  “YOU’RE UNDER ARREST!”

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

“You bastard.  That’s where you were for a year.  You RETRAINED yourself.  YOU GOT BETTER.”

I liked this issue, I liked it a lot.  A number of people will complain that there was nothing to it, just a prolonged battle between Green Arrow and Deathstroke, but if done right, it works and in this case it works.  The are several reasons why I liked it so much and part of it has to do with the fact that I liked how Deathstroke got his ass handed to him.  Don’t get me wrong:  I am a very big Deathstroke fan and there are times when I wish he could really shine (like during Identity Crisis).  But, in this case, Ollie’s plan worked to perfection (and who can resist a little Rube Goldberg).  The other reason I liked it is that it demonstrated very well that Green Arrow has indeed retrained himself and is indeed better.  Not only do we know what Green Arrow did during the missing 52 weeks, but we saw the results as he brings down Deathstroke.  Plus, we see it from Slade;s point of view, thus giving the reader a chance to also see Green Arrow in a different light.

Is Slade at one point says that Ollie brought Deathstroke to him.  Does that mean Ollie was the one who paid for his own assassination?  If so, then there must be a different assassin out there since they have gone to great pains to show the real estate developers hiring someone to kill the mayor of Star City.  Hey, maybe I figure out the plot for the next issue.

A little note:  the pages in my issue were printed out of order.  Page 6 (the tiny bomb explodes and Slade hits the wall) was actually placed after what should be Page 17 (Ollie and Slade fighting in the pit).
