Synopsis

On Daxam, Mongul defeats the planet’s armies and takes control.  He then sends out an invitation for other Sinestro Corps members to join him.  Two days later, a couple flees Mongul with the hope they can find their son, who is the only hope for Daxam.  On Oa, Kyle Rayner and Soranik Natu discuss what the Star Sapphire told them and what it means.  Despite the new law forbidding relationships, they kiss.  Soranik then notices Kyle had been drawing.  He shows her a bunch of drawings of dead Lanterns.  She suggests he should draw something to celebrate their life.  She suggests a large mural.  Elsewhere, Miri encounters Saarek, who is trying to gather information from debris form the anti-monitor.  Saarek then passes on a message from Kered, who is proud of his wife Miri.  On Daxam, Mongul announces he is the leader of the Sinestro Corps.  Arkillo opposes the idea.  The agree to fight for the position.  In Sector 2815, Sodam Yat and Arisa have captured Sinestro Corps member, Imecsub.  Just then there is an explosion.  Sodam’s mother has found him at last.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

This was a very good issue.  It boucnes from fantastic action on Daxam to quite moments on Oa, but it all comes together to create a beautiful whole.  While I still don’t buy the romance between Kyle and Soranik (it feels forced and contrived simply to fit into the story that Tomasi wants to tell, but that may just be me), I enjoyed their conversation.  Despite my reservations, it felt right, with the awkward moments and uncertainty of two people attracted to each other but uncertain what to do, especially in light of the new law.   And I especially liked Soranik’s reaction to Kyle’s drawings.  She was taken aback or disgusted and she didn’t walk out, but instead offer some compassion and help so that Kyle can understand what was happening.  It is a nice moment and indicative of Tomasi’s terrific handling of his characters.  This is also evident in the conversation with Saarek and Miri over the severed arm of the Anti-Monitor.  Their discussion of love and death is thought provoking and helps to really cement who these characters are.  It is a good scene and in fact this entire issue is extremely good.

Is it safe to say that Mongul single-handedly defeated the entire Daxam army?  Well, maybe that’s a really bad joke, but just the visual of the severed arm creating mayhem was hilarious.  And if he does take control of the Sinestro Corps, I would recommend he call it the Mongul Corps.  You know, to avoid confusion.

Imecsub is Buscemi backwards.  The most famous Buscemi would be Steve Buscemi, an actor in movies such as “Fargo,” “Reservoir Dogs,” “Ghost World,” and many, many others.  I wonder if Tomasi is a big fan?

Origins & Omens

Commentary

Again, not so much of an origin, but more of a continuation of the main story.  Regardless, I enjoyed this little vignette and I like the way all of the other Corps members stopped by to help.  I also like the idea of a mural showing the history of the Green Lantern Corps.  I really hope DC asks someone like Alex Ross to actually do something like that.  Perhaps not on a ceiling, but at the very least in this title.  As for the “omen” part of the story, there really is not much to add since we all know that “Blackest Night” is coming and will affect everyone in the Corps.  Although I have to ask:  is that Jade?  Well, she is dead so it is not a stretch to think she might be back.

I should also point out (on the next to last page) the cans of paint are of the seven colors of the various Corps with the Black spilled around them (and in the shape of a hand or claw).  Brilliant visual.
