Synopsis
The Guardians of OA have just enacted the third law: relationship between members of the corps is forbidden. In Sector 1111, Kyle Rayner, Soranik Natu, and others are fighting Kryb. In the battle, Kryb manages to cause explosion that covers the lanterns in a special infant formula that gives Kryb the ability to telepathically control them. Meanwhile, Lantern Matoo Pree has saved the baby Kryb had been trying to steal and now she returns to avenge the baby’s parent’s death. In Sector 1746, Mongul enjoys some rest and relaxation. In Sector 1416, Miri’s training as a member of the STar Sapphire is complete. She is charged with spreading love throughout the universe. In Sector 1111, Matoo Pree attacks Kryb, who warns her that senseless violence might induce labor. Sure enough, Matto Pree suddenly goes into labor. She creates a green construct to attack Kryb, who fights back by ordering the mind-controlled Lanterns to attack. They are able to overcome her construct and subdue her. Kryb then presides over the labor, telling her he can’t promise it won’t hurt…
Review by Binkley (e-mail)
This was a very good issue. The key is Kryb, who is a sick and demented villain brilliantly brought to life by Tomasi and Gleason. I loved the fight scene and thought the manner in which Kryb took control of the Lanterns was well done. I also liked Matoo Pree’s determination (and anger) to protect her unborn child and husband. I liked this issue. Very well done.
Despite the fact that I liked this issue, I have to wonder why so much time is being spent on Kryb given the fact that the title of the story refers to the Star Sapphire. I suppose I understand that Matoo Pree’s love will come into play (and perhaps she toss the green ring for a Sapphire ring), so I am willing to bet that Tomasi will find a way to make it all come together in the end. However, I would like to see more of the Sapphire Corps and see them on the job, so to speak. Right now it seems like the Sapphire Corps was created simple to fill out the various corps. In Green Lantern, Geoff Johns has crafted a good reason for the Red Lanterns to emerge and then we see them in action. And while I think Tomasi has provided ample reason why we need the Sapphire Corps, we still haven’t seen them in action.
The first couple pages were totally unnecessary. It just repeats the last couple of pages from the previous issue. I mean, we already knew about the third law. I understand the need to recap what had happened previously, but it seemed a little bit too much to spend so many pages on what we already knew.
It is interesting to note that Kryb tells the Lantern members they don’t need to wear masks, yet the very next shot of the group shows Rayner with his mask on!
