Synopsis

On Oa, the Guardians observe the power of the light of Zamarons and wonder how much longer to turn away and hope for the best.  In space, newly married Miri and Kered are heading towards their honeymoon when they are attacked by Mongul, who eats their food, drinks their water, kills Kered, and then leaves just as quickly as he arrived.  On Oa, Guy Gardner wants Ice to live with him, but she doesn’t want to leave Earth and Guy won’t leave Oa.  In Space Sector 1114, Kyle Rayner and Soranik Natu lead other Lanterns in search of Kryb.  Meanwhile, Miri decides she would rather die than live without Kered.  Before she can die, a power by the Star Sapphire finds her, giving her the chance the fill the void in her heart with the Star Sapphire.  Miri chooses the Star Sapphire.  Elsewhere, Saarek continues to search for the remains of the Anti-Monitor.  On Oa, Guy Gardner says goodbye to Ice.  Later, the Guardians instructs Guy to escort them on a diplomatic mission to Zamaron.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

This was another good issue.  It was enjoyable for a variety of reasons, not only for the stories that Tomasi is telling within the title right now, but also for the set-up he is giving for the stories that are coming up.  From the Star Sapphire scene building on the previous issues in Green Lantern to the intrigue of what Guardian Scar is up to, everything is blending seamlessly right now, with these issues building organically, naturally to Blackest Night rather than feeling like an editorially-mandated story.  This is good stuff.

If there is one thing I must give credit to Tomasi for, it is his ability to handle such a wide group of characters.  Everything is flawless as he touches base with the core members of the Lantern that make up this title while continuing the number of different plot threads that have been introduced in the past couple of years.  I love how the Lanterns are searching for Kryb (killer of babies), who was introduced on the special awhile ago, thinking that Kryb might be connected in some way to the death of the lantern families.  Not only brings back past events, but ties it to current events, and use Kyle and Natu as part of the search.

The best part of this issue is the conversation between Guy and Ice.  It was nearly perfect in the characterization of both, especially the way Guy’s abrasiveness is at odds with the affection he feels for Ice.  His attempts to ask her to move in with here were hilarious, but at the same time very heartfelt and sincere.  The same could be said for the pain and frustration he felt at not understanding what Ice was trying to tell him.  It was a wonderful scene and I wouldn’t mind to see more like this.

I think it was an awesome choice to have Mongul be the tool that leads to the first ever member of the Violet (Purple?) Lantern Crops.  For several issues, we followed Mongul and his quest for more yellow rings, so to see him return here and instill fear without actually meaning to.  Besides tying into the events in this title, it also sets the stage for enmity between yellow and violet (purple?) for future stories.

One line in this issue caught my attention.  Guy Gardner says, “Fire’s never like me.”  This is at odds with previous stories in which Guy and Fire had a full blown relationship.  Since this occurred in the Guy Gardner:  Warrior title I am willing to believe that DC has retconned that part of Guy’s past out of continuity, but I wished it wasn’t.
