Synopsis
On Earth, Kyle Rayner and Guy Gardner discuss the end of the Sinestro Corps War and what they will now that it is over. In Times Square, Guy Gardner approaches Ice about getting back together, but she is unsure what she wants to do. Guy gives her time, suggesting they meet again in a month. On Mogo, Kilowog shares a meal with his family. On a Rannian outpost, Vath Sarn drinks a toast to his fallen comrades. On Thanagar, Isamot enjoys a moment of life. On Betrassus, Princess Iolande wants to do her Lantern duty, but her duty as the princess overrides the Corps. On Oa, Salaak oversees the production of new power rings while Natu helps the wounded. In New York City, both Kyle Rayner and Guy Gardner consider what they will do next. In Space Sector 2809, Green Man and Stel are fighting a member of the Sinestro Corps, but lose him as he escapes to Space Sector 2811. There, he is killed and his yellow ring is taken by Mongul.
Review by Binkley (e-mail)
This particular issue, I think, will read much, much better once it is placed in the trade paperback. Read immediately after the events of the Sinestro Corps it will read like it should, as the coda to the war, providing a series of vignettes to the cast of characters that were followed throughout the storyline. The brief bits are effective in different ways, especially the contrasting methods of coping shown in partners Sarn and Isamot. However, as a standalone issue, coming a full month after the last Corps issue and two months since most of the characters were last seen, it is choppy, lacking any type of narrative. Granted, it is not supposed to, but because it is only a series a vignettes, it feels incomplete and a little inconsequential without the rest of the story fresh in mind, which it will be once the stories are collected together.
I was surprised to see that DC decided not to create some unity with their various titles by not showing Kyle Rayner joining with the rest of the Challengers, as seen in Countdown To Final Crisis. I kept waiting for it, but it never came. It will be curious to see if this is ever mentioned in this book (now that it looks like Kyle is supposed to be one of the major characters) or if it will be ignored.
It was nice to see more follow-up to Ice’s resurrection. The entire story of her return was very muted (and strangely written in Birds of Prey) and, in fact, I think this is only the second time they have attempted to do something with her character since she has come back. Hopefully, this is a sign we may see more of her and Guy in this title.
