Synopsis

In Sector 2261, Kilowog leads a group of lanterns to protect Mogo against an attack by the Sinestro Corps.  Part of the attack by the Sinestro Corps includes sentient city Ranx, which has gravity disruptors needed to dig into Mogo, and the Children of the White Lobe, who can increase the power of the gravity disruptors.  On Korugar, Soranik Natu decides to leave her homeworld to attend to duties elsewhere.  Meanwhile, the battle on Mogo is growing badly, so Kilowog decides to take the initiative and take the offensive.  On Oa, the Guardians learn what his happening are concerned about the Blackest Night prophecy coming true.  On Qward, lanterns continue in their pursuit of Ion, but instead, they find the Anti-Monitor.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

Most of this issue focuses on the battle of Mogo, which is fine.  This is supposed to be a war, so placing an entire issue around battle works for me.  Ultimately, I think it is the art that carries this story and Gleason and Unzueta provide great art for this story with pagers just bursting with yellow and green action and plenty of different types of characters.  I loved the moment when Kilowog bursts out of the page screaming, “Because I care!” (although this battle is far, far too short, in my opinion).  Regardless, the battle is intense and Gibbons and the artists create the stress the lanterns are under as they defend an important part of the corps.  The story itself is just a larger part of the war so there really is no plot development, other than to remind us of the importance certain characters (Natu, Yat) will play in the conclusion.

I also like the way DC is putting such focus on Mogo, not only in this storyline but also in terms of the Green Lantern mythos.  Over time, Gibbons has made Mogo the focus of a type of therapy when any lantern visits the planet and now with this issue, we learn that he is also responsible for making sure new recruits are brought into the corps.  While, it in terms of the plot, it solidifies why the Sinestro Corps think it is so important to attack Mogo, but it also makes the sentient planet a bigger part of the lantern corps once this story wraps up.

I think someone in editorial finally realized it was too difficult keeping track of individual chapters in the two Green Lantern books when the cover provides the part of the story anyway.  Thus, we get a title with no “part” or “chapter” that contradicts the cover.
