Synopsis
Guy Gardner has been framed for the murder of two lanterns. Vath Sarn and Isamot Kol have tracked him down to Mogo and with the help of Mogo’s partner, Bzzd, begin the search for him. When they find him, Gardner convinces them that something is not right with Mogo; he seems to be infected with some kind of fungal spore. Gardner contacts Soranik Natu to investigate and she concludes that Mogo is sick and that there must be a single spot where the spores are growing. They begin the search for it, but instead find Kilowog, who has been infected and looking for vengeance against Gardner. With the help of Bzzd’s sting, they are able to calm Kilowog long enough for Soranik to examine him and expel the infection. This awakens Mogo who tells the others to leave so he can deal with the problem. He crashes into an asteroid and the explosions destroying the infection.

I love it when a plan comes together. Not only did Gibbons manage to bring all of the various plot threads and characters come together in this issue, but he also manages to tie Mogo’s infection into the upcoming Sinestro Corps storyline. One complaint I have had is that while I like the multiple storylines running through the title, I would also like to see more interaction amongst the various characters and in this issue they all come together. More importantly, they work together as a team. They listen to Gardner when he tries to tell them what is really going on. I was really expecting the lanterns to do everything in their power to take Gardner back to Oa, regardless what Gardner tells them. This is a common theme in a lot of stories: the hero knows the truth, but his friends refuse to listen. It generates more conflict and suspense if the hero stands alone. Gibbons eschews this and has Vath and Isamot listen to Gardner and then join him to help solve the problem. It was a refreshing change of pace for which I happen to like.
Although not give a name in the book, I am going to assume that the infection (given its yellow color) is actually yellow lantern Despotellis, who was highlighted in Green Lantern, issue #18. For those who read both books, they will probably recognize the yellow lantern, but for those who only read the corps book, it doesn’t really matter who or what it was.
There is one moment that didn’t quite make sense: Soranik and Gardner leave the other to battle Kilowog and then just as quickly turn around to join the fight. Why have them leave in the first place. Why not just go right into the fight. It was a small moment, but I got that feeling of whiplash (they go there, no wait back here) that suggests the writer was unsure how to put together the scene.
