Synopsis

On Oa, Salaak denies more shore leave for Guy Gardner.  On Korugar, Soranik Natu comes to the aide of someone who needs medical attention.  When others watch her save the man, they ask for help as well.  In Clustral, Guy Gardner comes to help Quond and Tanakat Z.  Meanwhile, Vath Sarn takes his partner Isamot Kol to Mogo for some guidance.  Isamot encounters the Green Man, which scares him enough to leave Mogo.  On Korugar, the authorities learn what Natu is up to and attempt to put a stop to it with the use of force.  At that moment, Kilowog arrives with recent graduate Princess Iolande.  When Iolande tries to give advice on how to handle the situation on Korugar, Natu gets upset at her and the two begin to fight.  Kilowog breaks i tup, tellign them to get along or else.  He then heads off for a little r’n’r on Mogo.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

After a short break for the Corpse storyline, Gibbons returns, bringing back all of the characters from the first set of issues.  Whether or not you like this issue may depend entirely first if you like the multi-story approach and if you like the characters that Gibbons showcases.  I happen to like Natu so it is no surprise that her parts were the most intriguing.  I like her tenacity and her efforts to help her people overcome their (admittedly reasonable) bias toward Green Lanterns.  But the story really kicks in Iolande and Kilowog arrive to save her ass.  I especially like Kilowog’s dressing down at the end.  The top panel on page 21 with him yelling at the two women was well drawn; I can just see the wind from his scream forcing the two women backward.  Moreover, I like the way the two of them made peace, but grudgingly.  Their uneasy partnership may very well become the best parts of the issue.  On the other hand, I am not the intrigued by the pairing of Sarn and Isamot and was a little disappointed to see them return.  At least their presence might be tied into what is happening with Mogo, but beyond that, their pairing does nothing for me.

The strangest part of the issue is Gardner’s scenes.  The opening seems like it flows from Gibbons last issue, ignoring whatever happened in the Corpse.  Granted, he was supposed to forget the whole thing, but he should’ve realized he lost a lot of time as well.  This issue seems to pick it up as if there was no time lost at all.  And then he gets to Clustral and his actions are totally wrong.  Yes, Gardner is being written as the standard drill sergeant but in this case it was yell first, ask questions later.  It just seemed to be me that if Guy hadn’t been hurtling insults and trying to scare them into doing work, the situation would not have deteriorated as it did.  I suppose Gibbons is making the point that Gardner is acting that way because he did not get shore leave (which may also tied into the Kilowog/Mogo thing at the end) but even so it did not feel right.

It is also possible that the yellow things on the last page might be tied to the Sinestro Corps that Geoff Johns is writing (and Gibbons is drawing) over in Green Lantern.  If so, this is going ot be an interesting couple of months....
