Synopsis
The mega-Dominator is on Earth, surveying the destruction of the former home base of the former Justice League teams. It was all supposed to start there, with the death of the JLA, but now he must change his plans. Before he can leave, Darkseid appears and tells the mega-Dominator that Earth belongs to him. On the Dominion World, R’amey locates Guy Gardner and brings him back from the brink of death. Together, they head for Earth. Meanwhile, the mega-Dominator realizes he is not with Darkseid, but actually Daggle in disguise. The mega-Dominator captures Daggle and is about to kill him when Gardner and R’amey arrive. They battle the mega-Dominator and capture him. Gardner is ready to send him to prison, but R’amey kills him instead. Later, Daggle tells Gardner that he is not cut out for the Corpse. Then, R’amey wipes Gardner of his memory of the Corpse. Earlier, an unidentified object appears on the Dominion World and merges with a member of the Dominion...

The ending to the last issue was such a jolt (everyone was dead!) that I had to wonder how Champagne was going to pull out the last part to this storyline. I knew that no one had died, but Champagne had set up the bad guys with such authority that it was going to take some doing for Gardner et al. to win. Unfortunately, the return of R’amey turns out to be a complete and total deus ex machina that it undermines the rest of the story. R’amey just so happens to not only survive her attack, but she develops the powers that allows her to find Daggle and then kill the mega-Dominator. Plus, she is able to erase Gardner’s memory. This sudden reversal of fortune does the story no favors, turning a black ops story into traditional super hero fare with the good guys racing to save the day at the last moment. For a story like the Corpse, the victory should have been gained in the back corridors in the shadows, not out in the open above Earth.
The idea of the Corpse is pretty good and I would like to see more of Daggle and R’Amey. I also like the idea that at the end of the mission, Daggle not only kicks Gardner out of the Corpse, but also wipes his memory of those events. It puts the Corpse into the dark and allows any future writers to add the third member (or more) as they wish. And it allows DC to bring them back, if needed or ignore the Corpse, if they wish. Personally, I get this feeling based on the ending that this particular storyline will eventually led to other things that will be related to the BIG events that are slowly shaping the DCU for the next year or so.
