Synopsis
Embarrassed by the failed Invasion years ago, one of the Dominators has devised a new plan to conquer the universe. He shows the Dominator leaders his plan of genetically alteration by showing his experiments on the Khunds. The leaders, however, decide to create an army of altered Khunds rather than alter the Dominators. Meanwhile, Guy Gardner and new recruit R’amey Holl travel to Corona Seven to deliver a message to Von Daggle, a Durlan. There, they learn they are new recruits to the Green Lantern Corpse, a select undercover division of the Corps that handle the jobs to dirty for the green. And their first mission? To save the Dominators.

“Heh. I think my nipples just got hard.”
I like this issue, which is a good thing and not just that I liked it. No, it is a good thing because I was annoyed that Gibbons’ wonderful run was either being interrupted or cut short and I wanted more of the characters he had introduced. So, the goodness of this issue was a great surprise, especially the character of Von Daggle, whose introduction and method of operating were fantastic. I loved the way he took down Guy and then the way he conned Guy into punching out R’amey. Both instances were great uses of the ability to shapeshift. Another great tidbit was the almost afterthought that Von Daggle was being blackmailed (“we know where she is”) into helping out.
I am uncertain about the idea of this secret division within the Green Lantern Corps. On the one hand, almost every type of police force that I can think of always has a special division that always deals with the special undercover work. On the other hand, that type of unit is such a cliche that I am not sure this story can apply anything special to it to make it unique. Don’t get me wrong, the story with the Dominators in intriguing, but does it really necessitate the need to create a new undercover branch of the corps?
I also liked the little bit with Guy Gardner playing the role of mentor to R’Amey Holl followed by her admonishment not to treat her like a kid and then his respect to allow her the chance to prove that she has the chops. It is nice to see Guy in the role of mentor and a leader rather than the just the sexist pig everyone portrays him as. Granted some of that was there, but it fit into the story very well. In fact, the characterization of Guy was very well done in this story.
