Synopsis

On Oa, Princess Iolande does not respond well to Kilowog’s method of training, but she does appreciate Salaak’s gentler approach.  Meanwhile, Green Lanterns Gardner and Thos are searching for the kidnapped daughter of local politician on the Sentient City of Ranx.  In Korugar City, Soranik Natu is disbarred from practicing medicine because of her allegiance with the Green Lanterns.  Soranik decides to leave her homeworld.  Vath Sarn and Isamot return to Thanagar, when Isamot finds his beloved Qalyra in the arms of another man.  On Ranx, Gardner and Thos threaten to tear apart the city unless Ranx helps them.  With the city’s help they find the kidnapped daughter, but the kidnapper gets away.  After they leave the city, Ranx plots revenge against the Green Lanterns.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

How can this particular issue improve upon the first page which shows Kilowog in all of his glory dressing down a new recruit?  Well, besides the fact that said recruit actually tells him “no,” it is because the recruit is a character that has appeared in the series before, in the initial arc that led to the death of Soranik’s partner.  It is to Gibbon’s credit that I was pleased to see that this plot thread was not abandoned and that I am actually looking forward to seeing what will happened when Iolande and Soranik reconnect in the future.  For the first time we get a new character to expand the current cast and I look forward to see where this leads.

Like all of the issues in this book to date, your opinion will probably depend on how much a particular subplot or characters connect with you.  For me, the Thanagar scenes tend to annoy and/or bore while I wish there was more Soranik each month.  I find her plight of trying to do right while trying to battle against her people’s natural hated against Green Lanterns.  For this particular issue, I liked the Thos character (and his vocabulary) and Ranx was an interesting counterpoint to Mogo.  Since it looks as if Ranx will return, I am hoping that Thos will also return.
