Synopsis
On Restoria, Guy Gardner is in the midst of battling Bolphunga, except Gardner does not have his Green Lantern ring. Instead, the hotel’s manager has taken it. Meanwhile, Vath Sarn and Isamot are able to repel the invaders attacking Thanagar. As the ship leaves, Sarn wants to follow; Isamot wants to return back to his beloved, but loyal to his duty, he follows as well. On Restoria, Guy Gardner gets his ring back, only moments before Salaak captures Bolphunga. Salaak orders Gardner to Sector 73 to assist another Lantern while he remains in Restoria to help. On Mogo, Soranik Natu faces her fear of failure. In Deep Space, Vath Sarn and Isamot follow the ship to Sector 2828, the Vega System. Since that system is off limits to Lanterns, they turn around. In Sector 73, Gardner meets up with Lantern Thos who tells him that a local politician’s daughter has been kidnapped and taken to Ranx, a sentient city that hates Green Lanterns. On Korugar, Natu returns to duty as a doctor, despite her species intense dislike of Green Lanterns.
Review by Binkley (e-mail)
This book has had an interesting effect on me. While I like the book and I like what Gibbons has done so far, I am also getting itchy for one of the three stories or characters to wrap up so we can get to learn more about the other Green Lanterns. There are hundreds of Lanterns out there and I think it would be interesting to get to know some others besides the four that have been showcased to date. Unfortunately I don’t think we will get any new Lanterns as all three of the main stories could’ve easily ended but are now being stretched out for further adventures. Yet, I don’t mind since I do like them all and I am curious to see more. So, you can see my dilemma. At some point I am hoping that Natu, Gardner, and Isamot and Sarn come back into contact with each other or somehow these character’s stories will interact in some way. I don’t know the answer to this question, but I wonder if the book would benefit from a complete Natu issue or a compete Isamot and Sarn rather than continually bouncing back and forth with each other.
So far, Natu remains my favorite of the main characters. In some ways she reminds me of Kyle Rayner, of the young Lantern is slowly finding their way and learning what it is like to wield the power ring. She has made mistakes in the past, but is learning from them and is slowly coming into her own. However, I was a little disappointed that Gibbons decided to let Natu off the hook for the death of Myrrt. By providing the “drunk” defense, it absolves her from her decision to leave when she should’ve stayed. I agree with the patients coming forward, sometimes doctors do the best they can and still fail. But in the case of Myrrt, she is squarely to blame. By putting the blame on Myrrt’s shoulders, it takes away some character growth from Natu.
I must admit that I am intrigued by the idea of a living city with a beef against Green Lanterns. Can you imagine: Guy walking down the street and then suddenly a building falls on him, or there is an earthquake, or he gets struck somewhere and can’t get out. The possibilities of what the city can do are wide open and could be fun. What I would not like to see is the city and Guy joining forces to catch the kidnapper; it is such a cliche that it pains me to even think about it.
The sentient city Ranx was created by Alan Moore in Tales of the Green Lantern Corps Annual #2. In the same issue was the Children of the White Lobe.
