Synopsis
On Restoria, Guy Gardner is relaxing with three women on the beach when Bolphunga the Unrelenting crashes his spaceship on the planet. Bolphunga is looking for Gardner. On C’ythonis, Lantern Natu pays a visit to the parents of her dead partner, Myrrt. On Thanagar, Vath Sarn has just learned that Isamot has not been with his partner because he has fallen in love, albeit not by his choice. Suddenly, the Citadel attacks the planet. Sarn flies up to meet the attack force. Isamot wants to go as well, but he is told he must mate know or forever lose the chance. In Space, however, Sarn has been attacked and his power ring is failing. On Restoria, Gardner fights back Bolphunga as he gets the hotel manager to open the safe where he kept his power ring for safe keeping. However, when the safe opens, he finds it empty, just as Bolphunga is about to go for the kill.
Review by Binkley (e-mail)
Except for the fight and chase scene with Gardner and Bolphunga, this issue played as a variation on the same themes that were in previous issues. If this series is going to catch on, Gibbons needs to move his characters forward rather than staying on the proverbial hamster wheel.
Just like the title says, Bolphunga is unrelenting. I like the fact that Gardner was able to outthink Bolphunga and stay alive without the use of his power ring. One would think that after so many years of being a Lantern, he would learn fighting tactics that would allow him to survive without the ring, if he needed to. Unfortunately, the story was fairly predictable; it wasn’t hard to guess that the ring would be missing from the safe, even without the big honking clue (“The c-code...it’s been modified”) given to us a few pages earlier.
I am not really sure what the point of Natu’s visit to Myrrt’s parents accomplished. Part of me thinks that the mother’s distaste for the Lanterns and for Natu specifically is just another reason for Natu to doubt the reasons why she is a Lantern. Unfortunately, I think that this aspect of her character needs to be toned down. She has gone through a lot and I think at this point she needs to accept her role as a Lantern and have her character grow a little. Maybe we will get to see more of that when she takes on a new partner.
As for the Isamot and Sarn subplot, I have officially run out of patience. The sudden need for Isamot’s lover to mate right then and there was wildly predictable and frankly not all that interesting. So far we have several issues worth of Sarn wondering what the hell happened to his partner. As this point I had hoped some resolution would have occurred; hopefully it will end soon.
