Synopsis

In Sector 1417, Natu and Myrrt are assigned to protect the royal house of Betrassus.  In the midst of battle, one of the princes dies.  Natu thinks her ring is cursed.  On Oa, Guy Gardner’s wait for a full year for shore leave has ended, but Salaak refuses to let Guy see the Guardians.  Before Guy gets too violent with Salaak, Kilowog arrives and calms Guy down.  In Sector 2682, Vath Sarn is having difficulties while waiting for his partner Isamot, who was dealing with his own problems.  In a fit of anger, Vath Sarn hits Isamot.  On Oa, Guy and Kilowog return to Kilowog’s quarters for coffee and donuts.  Waiting for them is Natu.  She wants to quit, but Guy and Kilowog convince her to remain a green Lantern and to return to Betrassus, who have suddenly been attacked once more.  Myrrt calls for help.  Natu and Guy fly to the rescue.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

Since the end of Infinite Crisis we have been treated to a number of series starting with a #1 issue.  In some cases these first issues have been great, some have been fair, and at least one was just downright bad.  While, if I was hard pressed to offer a judgment, I would place this issue into average category.  The reason I would hesitate to offer this judgment is that to be fair, this is almost like issue #7 of the book since it comes after the Recharge mini-series and features all of the same characters (and the same writer).

Yet, I think this was the perfect way to go for this issue.  I like the fact that, at least for the first story arc, the characters highlighted in the Recharge mini-series are also being spotlighted here.  It will make easier reading for the moment as (hopefully) the series unfolds and more characters are thrown into the mix.  Or at least, that is what I would assume.  It would be a shame to have a book called Green Lantern Corps and not touch all different types of the members in the corps.  However, the addition of more characters is down the line, once some of the basics of the corps and the world in outer space is defined better for the readers.  For now, we get to see the corps through the eyes of Natu, a new recruit and through Kol and Isamot, natural enemies working together in the same sector.  In the midst of it all is Guy and Kilowog, two veterans who can provide their insight.  I really like the way Guy is portrayed here.  He has not lost any of his so-called charms, but he is shown as the veteran, one has been through it all and can and will dispense good advice, even while checking out your ass.  I think this role fits Guy and this has been the most interesting role for him in a long time.
