Synopsis

Just before Tokomak died, he tells Jason, “I know why you’re Firestorm...and you’ll never know.”  Jason asks Dr. Stein what this might mean, but upset at Jason’s actions that resulted in Tokomak’s death, Martin walks away without a word.  On New Year’s Eve, Jason along with Lorraine collect all of the dollies and deliver them to STAR Labs.  However, Mikhail Arkadin (aka Pozher) tells Jason of one more dollie.  At a diner, Jason finds the remaining dollie with the Pionic Man.  Both have decided to stay away from fights and battles and are looking for a place to live together.  Meanwhile, it continues to snow in New York City.  Jason finally decides to visit Martin, who is still upset at Jason.  Martin tells him that he needs to learn that all off his actions have consequences and problems can’t be solved overnight.  Later, Jason calls his father to wish him a happy new year before going to Time Square with Gehenna and Martin to watch the ball come down.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

“After all...just because one wears a combat suit and has enhanced abilities, one needn’t jump straight into every Civil War or Crisis that comes along.  Am I right?”

This was not only a wonderful ending to an epic multi-part story as well as a wonderful ending to the end of Moore, Igle, and Champagne’s run on Firestorm.  There are a lot of things to like from the hilarious diner conversation between the head dollie and Pionic Man (I think it is Felix and Oscar, but I could be wrong), to actually seeing Firestorm find all the dollies rather than claiming he did off-panel, to the burgeoning romance between Lorraine and Mikhail, to Gehenna remaining in Jason’s and to Jason and Martin’s final conversation.  As Martin states, not all problems can be fixed overnight and in this issue they aren’t, but at the very least we can tell Jason is in a better place and probably will be able to handle his problems better.  He also comes out of this with a better relationship with Martin, an understanding that the two did not have before.  These character beats and character growth show how far Moore has taken this cast.  While I am interested to see what the next writer has in store, I am going to miss the current creative team.

I liked the whiskey bottle on page 13.  The Irish Whiskey is made by Igle and Co. and it looks to be the Stuart Moore signature brand.  Or something like that.

There is one conundrum with this issue.  According to the Pionic man, Chanukah occurs between December 16th and December 23rd, which happens to exactly correspond to the same dates for the year 2006.  Normally this would be a nice touch.  Except, these issues are supposed to be One Year Later, or after the events in 52.  Based on several issues of 52, those events are happening in 2006.  Which means Firestorm’s One Year Later is not really alter.  Shouldn’t there be some type of space-time disruption and the universe explodes?  Or an editor will get his ass chewed out.
