Synopsis

Mister Freeze and Killer Frost have frozen an entire block of the city, including Firestorm.  Mister Freeze places a device on Firestorm’s back, which sends him rocketing into the outer space, with Killer Frost attached.  They are heading to the sun.  Meanwhile, Jason’s dad and Jason’s girlfriend talk and bond with each other waiting for Jason to return.  On the sun, Killer Frost is absorbing the solar energy and could potentially destroy the sun.  Plus, the matrix is becoming unstable.  Neither Jason nor Lorraine know enough science to figure out what to do.  Suddenly, Professor Stein appears in the matrix.  He gives a clue to his whereabouts and offers help to defeat Killer Frost before someone else pulls him out of the matrix.  With the professor’s help, Jason is able to defeat Killer Frost and return her to Earth.  Waiting for him is Batman, who yells at Firestorm for being careless before he takes Mister Freeze back to Gotham City.  Right after Firestorm takes care of Killer Frost, he is going to find Professor Stein and he knows where to start.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

“He’s just an ordinary man in a bat suit.  I could take his head off in a second.  But he’s got me shaking!”

That was one cool issue.  Ha!  Thank you, I’m here all week.  Try the veal.  Whew, am I hot!  Ahem.  All right I’ll stop.  I could not resist the temptation.

Seriously, though, this was a cool issue.  The appearance by Batman was handled beautifully and I loved Jason’s reaction.  What could be cooler (sorry) than getting a verbal dressing down from one of the living legends in the superhero world?  For someone who is so young, Jason’s reaction was perfect.  And Batman’s concession that Jason had obviously learned a lot but needed more to learn was also great.  In that one brief scene, there is a sense that Jason has indeed grown.  Some of this undercut by the scene on the sun when neither Jason nor Lorraine could figure out what to do.  Part me of sympathizes because frankly I am clueless with science, but part of me wonders why Jason has not learned more since he became Firestorm.  I understand that is why Professor Stein is supposed to be part of the Matrix, but you would think Jason could handle some of the basic stuff.  Or maybe I’m just nitpicking.  As I said, this was a very good issue.  I enjoyed the interplay between Freeze and Frost, including the way she completely blew him off after he refused her advances because of his wife.
