Synopsis

The Anti-life Equation has spread throughout the world.  The Spectre and Radiant are caught in the middle of zombies bent on forcing them to Darkseid’s will.  Meanwhile, Renee Montoya (aka The Question) is attacked by Kate Kane (aka Batwoman) who has submitted to the Anti-life Equation.  Kate tries to make Renee submit, but Renee refuses.  She is then saved by the Spectre and Radiant, who take them to a church.  Elsewhere, Vandal Savage, who bears the mark of Cain, searches for the Spectre to exact revenge.  It is there they wait, protecting those who have not yet submitted.  Finally, Vandal Savage arrives.  He calls out the Spectre, who accepts the challenge.  In the fight, Savage uses the Spear of Destiny and stabs the Spectre in the back.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

How much you like this issue may very well depend on how much you may have found the middle section, the pages set within the church, either irritating or interesting.  Personally, I was somewhere in the middle.  I am not a deeply religious person, so the foray into religion and God doesn’t do much for me, but given that this is a book with the Spectre (the vengeance of God) as one of the main characters, I expected some of theological discussion to permeate the book.  But I did not expect to read such a detailed dialogue between Cris and Claire.  Granted, it was a fascinating stuff and it certainly does help to set up the plot of Cain versus the Spectre for the reader, but I am not really sure the lengthy discussion adds much to the overall story or the plot.  The church scene seemed to weigh down the rest of the story.  But not by much, mind you.  As I said, it was a compelling conversation and with the stage set for the anti-life in the beginning and the battle at the end, this series is still one of the better tie-ins to the Final Crisis series.  I especially loved the ending with Cain’s rant about evil (“I birthed murder!”) as he beat down the Spectre (and made a good point about the use of his fists; I mean, really).

Someone pointed this out to me, so don’t think I am brilliant and all that.  However, in the bible, God gave the mark to Cain as an act of mercy.  Because Cain killed his brother, he would be wanted and hunted wherever he went.  So God branded Cain as sign that whoever would kill Cain would experience God’s vengeance.  After the mark is placed on him, Cain actually has a good life.  Maybe that’s point.  Without the mark, Cain would’ve been a villain.  Vandal Savage is pissed because God neutered him!  Or something like that.

Claire Coeur is French for “Clear Heart.”  I am not sure why I didn’t think to check that out before.  And I am  not really sure what it is supposed to mean.  But there you go.
