Synopsis
At the airport, Oberon and his moving company are being detained by Oolong Island security to inspect their cargo before being allowed to leave. Suddenly, something in the place blows up. Elsewhere, Crazy Jane tries to convince Father Rocky Davis to help Danny the Brick. Meanwhile, Negative Man and Robotman arrive at the airport to investigate the explosion. Two humanoid creatures emerge from the explosion. They claim they are missing a brick. They also report that are expanding the portal. Negative Man and Robotman realize the humanoid creatures are talking about Danny. Just then, a mechanical dog appears. It runs through everyone, including Elasti-Woman, straight to the hospital and to Father Davis, who is holding Danny the Brick.

“Confining one’s perception of reality to reality as perceived is counterproductive”
For the first time in a long time, I actually enjoyed an issue of the book. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that Giffen wrote a story that did not require any previous knowledge of Doom Patrol history. It is, essentially, a straight forward issue. The story builds upon the plot from the previous issue rather than material from previous volumes of the title. The characters not only all appeared from the previous issue, but also continue the linear narrative from that last point. Finally, the issue features some well-crafted and funny dialogue between Larry and Cliff, the usual Giffen-written oddity in the form of the creature taking over reality, and a mechanical blood hound. Who can resist a mechanical blood hound. It was a refreshing issue; I really liked it. Hopefully this will start a trend in which we’ll see more contained stories in this title that don’t rely so much on the context of the other bazillion volumes of Doom Patrol.
Giffen add a nice little nod to Grant Morrison in the write-up of Danny the Street, who was created by Morrison during his run on the title. I am curious if the quote above actually came from Morrison. It certainly sounds like something he would write.
