Synopsis

Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman) is being held at gunpoint by “The Thief,” who wants everyone to know how good he is by taking down Catwoman.  Selina is able to take away the gun and make her getaway.  After resting a bit, she then goes after the Calculator to find out to find the Thief.   Eventually, Calculator gave her the information she needed.  Catwoman then goes after him.  Later, she is running away when the Suicide Squad catches up to her to arrest her and send her away.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

I was really, really enjoying this issue, until the final four pages.  The bad news is that the book has been hijacked by Salvation Run.  I was enjoying what Pfeifer was doing with the character and I am disappointed that it will be halted to serve DC editorial needs.  The good news is that Pfeifer has shown the ability to write good material in crossover issues, so hopefully the quality won’t suffer from being forced into a specific setting and story.  It will be interesting to see what happens to Selina and how well it will work compared to the main book.

I am curious why they didn’t show the fight between the unimaginatively named Thief and the Catwoman.  Was the inclusion of the Suicide Squad a last minute addition, forcing Pfeifer and Lopez to rearrange the issue?  If so, then I am guessing the fight would’ve taken up the last four pages.  Or maybe not.  It seems to me that Pfeifer was setting up for more than just a three story arc (perhaps Selina and Thief join forces?)

One thing that I am fully aware of when I read Catwoman is that the book and the character are part of the DC universe, a fact that is reinforced by the appearance of the Suicide Squad in this issue.  Where this becomes problematic is when the Calculator talks about the skills of the Thief, who has been committing crimes all over Gotham.  Fine, except for one person:  Batman.  I find it hard to believe that if the Thief has been doing what he is doing and Batman would not be all over the situation, or even solved the crime.  It is hard to accept things happening in Gotham that Batman wouldn’t be investigating.  Now, knowing this doesn’t negate the great story, but it does make me pause reading for a moment, pulling me out of the story.
