Synopsis

In the middle of the street on the East End of Gotham City, Magda of the Bana holds a bomb in her hand, threatening to set it off.  Despite the police on the scene to deal with the situation, Catwoman jumps in the fray to take the bomb back.  When Catwoman gets the bomb, the police kill Magda and then train their guns on Catwoman, whom they blame for the death of Detective Lenahan.  Using the bomb as leverage, Catwoman manages to get away.  The next day, Catwoman attempts to locate the Bana but finds their hideout empty.  Then, Oracle calls to Catwoman that someone is looking for Catwoman or Selina Kyle.  That night, the Bana find Selina and Helena, but Selina had set a trap and defeats the Bana warrior.  After she is taken away, Selina picks up her baby and drives away.

Sometimes there is not much one can say about a comic book, especially one that was not only a good story, but one that manages to build successfully on previous issues, showing a character who has learned from past mistakes.  This is one such issue.  Since the One Year Later leap, Pfeifer has been escalating the danger to Helena in each story arc as each villain seems intent on using Selina’s daughter as part of their plan to get at Catwoman.  Pfeifer builds on that, showing Selina getting wise and using her daughter as a pawn.  More than that, I love Selina’s reaction to the Bana’s decision.  She is disappointment, hurt, and frustration that one more person would use her daughter in the battle rather than go straight at Catwoman.  And after it is all over, I get the sense based on the final pages that Pfeifer has some more changes in mind for Catwoman.  It is a good piece of writing; I love it when writer’s a fully aware of what they are doing and the continually build and expand upon previous pieces.

The guest-starring part of Martian Manhunter was an interesting choice.  These are the times when I wonder if this was luck or if it was planned since it appears as if both J’onn and Selina may very well be part of the new Batman and the Outsiders series.  The curious part is the team being assembled are supposed to be fugitives, so based on a lot of Selina’s recent history (and the police reaction in this issue) she would certainly fill the bill.

I noticed last week that editorial forgot to slap the Amazons Attack Tie-In on the cover.  This week it is here, even though this has less to do with the war that the first issue.  The logo also looks weird, as if they couldn’t be bothered to go with the full logo seen on the mini-series proper.  My guess is that they wanted to stick to the black and red aesthetic which would have been ruined by the mulit-color AA logo.
