Synopsis
Selina and Holly stand outside Holly’s apartment, watching as a pizza delivery guy rings the doorbell. When Detective Lenahan comes barreling out the door, Selina knows that as long as the police know the identity of “Catwoman,” Holly can never go home again. But Selina has a plan.... In Alaska, a prisoner exchange between the United States and Russia goes bad; Boris and Natasha Ulyanov (code names: Hammer and Sickle) are on the loose once more. At Gotham police department, the captain tells Lenahan to work on a real case and forget Catwoman, or else. Meanwhile, Selina calls Noah Kuttler (aka Calculator) to ask him to erase Holly’s name from police files. He agrees, providing she steals a paperweight currently in the possession of Lex Luthor.
Review by Binkley (e-mail)
“I know everyone expected Helena’s dad to be someone else more colorful, but Sam was a great guy.”
You have to give Pfeifer props for addressing the letdown some of the Batman-freaks felt when it was revealed that Batman was not the father. At least he is aware of what others think, although I suspect the Batman-freaks will probably miss the remark while they piss and moan at poor Sam Bradley.
Overall, this was an interesting mish-mash of material as Pfeifer is attempting to maintain the continuity from the previous arc while introducing new elements for whatever else he has planned. This is the set-up arc, but there seems to be a lot tossed in here that it doesn’t read all that smoothly. And some it falls flat. The introduction with Hammer and Sickle left me cold (pun not intended) in that the crazier spouse angle does not interest me at all. Hopefully Pfeifer can do more with these characters than the cliché they inhabit in this issue. Also, I am not at all that interested in Lenahan; I was actually hoping that after his first brief scene in the beginning he would be gone. Selina’s point about Holly’s name in the computers and how future detectives would view that information is more relevant that a crazy person trying to catch you. So more Lenahan is not that promising, although I get this feeling Lenahan will be the one delete Holly’s name, rendering her deal with Calculator a moot point. However, I did like Selina’s battle with the Triple Threat or whatever they called themselves. It is always nice to see any superhero win the easy battles against stupid people.
I am also intrigued to see where the theft of the snow globe is going to lead, especially learning the reasons why the Calculator wants it in the first place. As long as no one calls it Rosebud....
