Synopsis

On Oa, the Guardians read numerous stories of complete civilizations wiped away by a creature called the Purge.  The Guardians wonder if Kahlo is about to share the fate of the other worlds.  On Kahlo, Hal Jordan, along with the Phantom Stranger and Orlan the local Green Lantern, investigates the destruction of the city Kymera.  Later, they return to Orlan’s home.  Jordan decides to rest while the Phantom Stranger talks to Orlan’s wife.  Suddenly, Phantom Stranger is attacked and he is knocked unconscious.  Meanwhile, Jordan is unable to sleep so he decides to investigate further.  He learns that the indigenous plant-life has been transformed into a deadly toxin.  Elsewhere, the lone survivor is killed.  On Earth, a young girl, physically wounded by an experimental drug, is dangerously ill and close to death.  On Kahlo, Jordan returns to find the Phantom Stranger.  He is then attacked by the Purge.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

In my review of the first issue of this story, I complained about how I liked the scenes with the girl in Arcadia much better than the scenes in outer space.  So, naturally, the second issue of this story is primarily set in outer space, with the little girl shuttled off to the side.  That is not to say that I didn’t like this issue, but the more interesting aspects of the story (for me at least) have largely been forgotten.  As a result I wasn’t that interested in the story itself.  I don’t know.  Obviously you’re mileage may vary, depending on how much you like Hal Jordan or sci-fi.  For me, I am hoping that the next issue will focus more on the girl in Arcadia.

So far there is very little of a true team-up in this story.  Essentially the Phantom Stranger showed up to pull Jordan into the story and since then has become a bystander.  The only thing that the Phantom Stranger seems to be doing is following Jordan around (and telling everyone, it’s magic!), but they are not doing much together.  If I had to guess the ultimate solution will mix Jordan’s ring with Phantom Stranger’s mysticism to save the day, which makes sense.  But it would be helpful to have them do something as a team before we get to the ending.
