Wings And Arrows September 2008 Written by Mark Waid Pencils by Scott Kolins Inks by Scott Kolins
Cover by Scott Kolins
Synopsis Nightwing rallies the super heroes to fight against the onslaught of Trigon. However, that turns out to be a lie as Nightwing, with the help of Boston Brand, uses the supposed threat to make sure the heroes don’t go to Nanda Parbat, which is under the control of Siva Anuttara and an army of Ghost Killers. The only hero not sent is Hawkman, whose knowledge of Egyptian artifacts will be helpful. So, Hawkman and Nightwing travel to Nanda Parbat. Together they battle through the Ghost Killers and defeat Anuttara.
Review by Binkley (e-mail) I really liked this issue. It wasn’t much more than an extended fight scene as Nightwing and Hawkman battle the Ghost Killers to get to Anuttara and then steal the medallion, but it was a well done fight scene. I liked Kolins art and his layouts for the fight and I like the way Waid wrote Nightwing and Hawkman working together, especially the method to retrieving the medallion. In fact, I liked the way Waid put all of the pieces together, explaining Ollie’s actions at the end of last issue, explaining why other heroes weren’t along to help save the world, and then showing Nightwing and Hawkman using their considerable talents to reach their goal. Plus, it was nice to see Green Arrow finally hit his mark, although Kolins drew the tortured and beaten Ollie to look a lot like the Hunchback of Notre Dame.
I also like how Waid took two natural team-ups (Deadman and Nightwing because of their circus background and Green Arrow and Hawkman for their diverse opinions) and shook them up to create something different.
