Synopsis
Thanks to the Book of Destiny, Megistus has stolen the body of Metamorpho and the power battery of Green Lantern. The Challengers of the Unknown attempt to stop him, but Megistus is too strong. At the Daily Planet, Clark Kent bullies another reporter and kisses another woman. When someone tells Clark to stop hiding, it is revealed to be Ultraman. Superman challenges him, but Ultraman says he needs the Man of Steel’s help. Superman doesn’t believe him, until he encounters Mixyezpitelik, the serious version of the fifth dimension imp. Mixyezpitelik tells Superman and Ultraman that they need to work together to stop Megistus. Som the duo head for the home of Megistus, the sun, but Megistus gets there first, turning the yellow sun green.

In my last couple of reviews, I had mentioned that I was having trouble with this series because of the multiple team-ups and the nostalgia fueled writing style. This issue abandons that format and basically tells a straight-forward story and I enjoyed this one a lot better than the past couple of issues. Although Ordway is a little more straightforward with his panel layout than Perez, his art is similar, so it doesn’t feel like this issue is out of step with the previous issues. And this is a good thing since Waid continues the Megistus storyline that began with the very first issue. Unlike previous issues that simply used Megistus as a connecting thread and the Challengers as bookends, this issue is primarily featuring Megistus and how to defeat him. This suggests Waid is heading towards the end of this mega-storyline and I look forward to seeing what happens.
Ultraman confused me a little bit. Since he is from Earth-3, which is the opposite of New Earth, I could’ve sworn that being the opposite of Superman, Ultraman actually grew stronger when exposed to Kryptonite. Unless this is the Morrison version, in which case he needs anti-Kryptonite. Regardless, I am not sure what effect the yellow sun is supposed to have on him, but given he is the opposite of Superman, shouldn’t the yellow sun hurt him?
