Synopsis
In the 31st Century, the Luck Lords tell Batman and the Legion of Super Heroes that no one can help them. The Lords are now poised to rewrite the Book of Destiny, beginning on the first page thanks to events engineered in the 21st Century. Those events included prolonging the Rann/Thanagarian War. Now, in the midst of the war are Supergirl, Adam Strange, and Green Lantern. They are trying to retrieve the Book of Destiny. Supergirl knows they must get the book and give it to the men who are not in it, but she doesn’t know who they are. Batman knows, but he is stuck in the future. With the help of Green Lantern’s willpower, Adam Strange recalibrates the zeta beam to transport Batman through time back to the present day. Batman then helps Adam Strange find the Challengers of Unknown, four men who cheated death and are not in the Book of Destiny. Because of that, they are able to change destiny and retrieve the book, foiling the Luck Lords plans.

Like the rest of the issues in this story, this was entertaining, exciting, amusing, and best of all just plain fun. I loved the fight scenes with the “Challs” (as they are called in the book) taking down the villains with quick action and lightning-fast dialogue. How can you not enjoy it when one of the Challs exclaims, “Yoink” when he grabs the book? In fact, their appearance is the best part of his installment as Waid and Perez go nuts with the action as it becomes loose and crazy and all over the place, which is a good thing. It is one of the charms of this book, their ability to create a loose story that still manages to come together at the end. And Waid and Perez do a wonderful job tying all of the loose ends to the story and ending it in a very satisfactory manner.
My first reaction to Waid’s solution to the story with the Challengers of the Unknown was that it was rubbish. After all, there are a number of characters that have cheated death over the years, including Superman, Green Arrow, and so forth and so on. Then I realized something. The Challengers were actually different. They were supposed to die, but didn’t. Who is to say that Superman’s death and resurrection wasn’t part of the grand plan of things? I guess death and return and is vastly different that just not dying when you should.
Is the guy with the book supposed to be called Mondath, as we see on the bottom of page 5 or Mordath as we see on Page 16?
In her ramblings of things she saw in the book of Destiny, Supergirl mentions the New Gods, a Great Disaster, and Earthfall, all of which seemingly will play a big part in the Countdown series. The Great Disaster was also mentioned in the current issue, #37, which is the one referenced in the bar code on the cover.
