Synopsis

In Metropolis, Booster Gold stops a gang of would-be thieves.  In the fight, one of them runs.  Booster Gold tracks him down, but in the crossfire, a small dog loses its life.   A young girl and her father blame Booster for the dog’s death.  Later, Rip finds Booster in 1908 contemplating all of the things that have gone wrong recently, including his relationship with his sister, which became even more strained when he couldn’t save her boyfriend in the destruction of Coast City.  Rip tells him he needs to talk to her.  Booster returns to Rip’s lab and apologies, telling her he is frustrated and angry he can’t change the past or that he couldn’t help her.  Michelle forgives him.  Later, Rip tells Booster that some small events can be changed.  Together, they go back and save the dog that Booster accidentally killed.  Afterwards, Rip travels to the Vanishing Point, where he discovers an anomaly: the bat signal.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

This was a nice coda, wrapping up a couple of open-ended plot and story elements, leading the way for the new writers to jump on board.  It is the type of story that I don’t think Jurgens would’ve written if he was to remain as the writer.  It felt too much like a neat wrapping bow to the series and to the things and ideas he had been working on since he jumped on board.  But since he is leaving (and managed to include a prologue to his next project at the end), Jurgens juggled around the book so the new writers wouldn’t have to deal with any outstanding items.  They can deal with Michelle if they want to or they can deal with Booster brooding over the past if they want.  But they can also ignore those elements as well and it won’t feel like something is missing.  Jurgens made sure to wrap it all up for them.  Overall, it works.  I liked it and I am ready to see what the new writers have in mind.

I am probably not the only person who flipped back to beginning to see if Rip and Booster in trench coats are visible in the original scene.  As Rip said, they were there, I just didn’t notice.  Not only are they visible, but Jurgens drew the scene with the exact same angle.  Except for a change in lightning, they are pretty much the same.  Pretty cool.

Interesting to note the headlines on the newspapers on the credit page:  “Tech Thefts.”  I wonder if this is a sly allusion to the thefts carried out by Prometheus in the Cry for Justice mini-series.  Since Booster mentions STAR Labs, it is possible the thieves were working for Prometheus.

The Tunguska Event was a powerful explosion that occurred on June 30, 1908.  The source of the explosion is up to debate although many think it was a meteorite or possibly a comet.  Either way, it is the largest impact on Earth in recent history.

On the last page, the second panel, I think it should be “entropy” and not “entroy”.
