Synopsis
After Booster Gold uses Rip Hunter’s time sphere to save the life of Blue Beetle, the duo find the world has changed. Max Lord, the leader of Checkmate, has taken over, systematically destroying all heroes with OMACs. Now, Booster Gold and Blue Beetle have joined Green Arrow and Hawkman in a group called the Freedom Fighters. With the use of Blue beetles ship that is invisible to OMACs, the small group decides to storm the Checkmate headquarters and destroy the OMACs. Meanwhile, in the time stream Rip Hunter convinces Daniel Carter, Booster’s relative to don the Supernova costume to help Booster. At the Vanishing Point, the Time Stealers plot to make sure Booster Gold fails to fix the timeline. Meanwhile, the new Freedom Fighters approach Checkmate headquarters when they are attacked by Superman, who is under Max Lord’s control. The fight goes badly and Booster and Beetle are forced to retreat to the old JLI headquarters, where Booster realizes they need to get the gang back together to fight Max Lord.

OMAC = Observational Metahuman Activity Constructs
There is a little bit of “Days of Future Past” in this storyline and I can’t quite make up my mind if this is better or worse for the story. On the one hand, it was interesting to see how the world changed once Max Lord took over as well as seeing old and minor heroes gathering together to stem the tide (and amused to see Pantha since Geoff Johns famously had Prime literally rip off her head in Infinite Crisis). On the other hand, in an effort to create this new world, I think Johns and Katz are getting away from the core concept of this title, which is the time travel adventures of Booster Gold. The first storyline of this series featured Booster traveling to a different time period pretty much each issue. In contrast, this story has placed Booster in one time and place. I miss the time travel antics and I am eager to see Booster visiting various points in the DCU past.
Having said the above, this was a good issue because Johns and Katz have started to divulge the über-story by revealing the motives and actions of the Time Stealers. They had been in the background for awhile, but now they seem to be getting more play, suggesting that the Blue and Gold story while come to a head with the Time Stealers. Remember, Booster only agreed to join Rip if he could save Blue Beetle, so being forced to send his friend back to death would lead directly into what the Time Stealers are trying to accomplish: make Booster give up.
