Synopsis
In El Paso, a protest called “A Day Without Immigrants” is being planned to show America how much they depend on those who cross the border. In case of trouble, Blue Beetle has called for the Teen Titans to help out. While they protect the protest, Blue Beetle searches for the kids who came over the border and manifest super powers. He finds them at the border. With the Teen Titans, they head over to deal with the situation. Meanwhile, Mariposa, who thinks Paco is Blue Beetle, holds him and Brenda while she waits for her father’s man. When he arrives, however, he is more concerned in dealing with her. With the distraction, Paco and Brenda take them both down. Meanwhile, Blue Beetle deals with the disturbance at the border. Robin, however, senses something else is going down and realizes there are trucks coming into the city. Robin and Peacemaker stop the drugs, which are loaded with guns. Afterwards, Paco and Brenda arrive with Mariposa, who informs them that the border skirmish was just a diversion for her father, Dr. Polaris, who is elsewhere stealing monopoles, magnets with a single pole. Blue Beetle tracks him down, but too late. Dr. Polaris already has them and uses their power to seemingly kill Blue Beetle.

“Blue Beetle’s dead? What will we do for the next three issues then?”
There are times when there is really not much I can say about a particular issue other than to say I enjoyed it immensely. This is one of those issues. I love the combination of humor and action that Sturges infuses into the story and the characters are strong and vibrant, making them seem more real than some real people that I know. I suppose I can question the need to toss the Teen Titans into the mix and spotlighting Robin for several pages (when we really should more of Blue Beetle in action), but I can’t complain that much. While Sturges puts the team to good use, they don’t overshadow the main character as Jaime provides the solution and Cassie provides the means to achieve that solution. Plus, the Titans appearance is a natural evolution of events not only in these pages, but also Jaime’s appearances in the Teen Titans main book. Really, the Titans involvement is not that out of place. So, overall, this is another good issue and a great set-up to the finale of the current storyline. Can’t wait to read more.
