Synopsis

After Jaime returns home via Boom Tube after rescuing Brenda, he destroys the Mother Box.  Jaime and La Dama part ways with the understanding that they are even.  One week later...Jaime contacts Peacemaker, hoping they can come to an understanding about the different pieces of information that each of them contain.  While investigating a strange phenomenon, they encounter an alien ship that negatively impacts the scarab.  Jaime and the Peacemaker escape momentarily, but the alien ship continues to come after them.  Jaime is able to override the ship’s impact on the scarab and power up.  He then finds a way to destroy the ship.  They are then contacted by someone from the Reach, who tells Jaime they have come to save the Earth.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

This issue features more of the usual stuff, with light hearted comedy, some decent action, and more mystery surrounding the scarab.  So, as usual this is a very good issue.  Hopefully, we will be getting a little bit more info on the Reach and what it supposed to be.  It has been a year, so I think it is about time to learn more.

The opening sequence was not all that important or needed, other than to get the rest of the supporting cast in this issue for a brief cameo.  The sequence comes across as a leftover bit from the previous arc.  It really should’ve been in the previous issue, not this one.  I really hope these pages are included in the trade paperback with the rest of the New Gods material (as I am assuming the Reach storyline will arc over several issues).

The core of this issue is the conversation between Jaime and the Peacemaker.  It was a nice bonding moment between the two and it really helps further solidify the mentor relationship they really have, despite what the Peacemaker might suggest.  It also helped to explain what the Peacemaker has going on inside his head, although I am still uncertain what it all means.  From what I can gather, Jaime has the ability to use the suit, but no the knowledge, while the Peacemaker has the directions to sue it, but not the ability.  If so, I am not quite sure why Peacemaker would want to kill Jaime.  Or something like that.

In an issue that focuses on the Peacemaker, I like how Rogers was able to include all of Jaime’s supporting cast for brief cameos, including a brief mention of Hector and Nadia (is that the first time they have been given names) and the Beetlecave.  Heh.  I still think that’s pretty funny.  The Beetlecave.  Ahem.  Sorry.
