Synopsis
In Coast City, Nekron has just transformed the resurrected such as Superman and Green Arrow to Black Lanterns. Power rings attempt to find Barry Allen (aka Flash) and Hal Jordan (aka Green Lantern), but Barry, with Hal tethered to him, outruns the rings. Elsewhere, Deadman helps Ray Palmer and Queen Mera of Atlantis to escape the inside of a power ring. Meanwhile, John Stewart (aka Green Lantern) informs Earth that more Black Lanterns are coming. In Coast City, the New Guardians realize that they don’t have enough power to destroy Nekron. Ganthet realizes they need all of the corps to extinguish the black power battery. They can assemble them, but they need time. Ganthet then takes Hal’s ring and duplicates it, making himself a member of the Green Lantern Corps. He then tells the others their power rings can deputize someone else. Ganthet triggers the process and the following are inducted to the various crops: Barry Allen (Blue), Lex Luthor (Orange), Queen Mera (Red), Scarecrow (Yellow), and Wonder Women (Violet), and Ray Palmer (Indigo).
Review by Binkley (e-mail)
If this issue seems short, it is probably because it is. Part of this is due to the fact that out of the six issues to date, this one is the shortest in terms of page count. The other reason is that only two things really happen in this issue: Barry’s race against the ring and the deputies of the various rings arriving on the scene. As such, the plot and the story are kind put on hold for the time being so Johns can focus on these things. Perhaps neither deserves the page count it is given, but frankly I didn’t mind; it is still amazing. Johns and Reis blow through these developments pretty quick. The issue reads quickly, partly because there is very little to it, but also because it is damn good. It is one of those comic books that manages to straddle the line between awesome and stupid so that it becomes stupidly awesome. In fact, I think that kinda describes the entire Blackest Night mini-series. It is stupidly awesome. I am loving every moment; this is a great series.
The choices that Johns makes for each of the new corps are pure genius, especially Lex Luthor, while at the same time so obvious. As I was reading, I didn’t question the decision or think there was a better choice; they all make sense. As much as I like the choice of characters for the New Guardians’ deputies, some of the costume choices are not so great. Why does Ray Palmer look like he as the Sword of Atom costume again, albeit in indigo. Wonder Woman should not be in such a revealing costume. For me (at least) it doesn’t work. Both Lex and Scarecrow are just different colored version of their costumes already as the costume for Lex Luthor is nothing more than an Orange version of his purple/green battle suit. It is tough to tell with Barry based on his pose, but I think it is probably just a blue version of what he has.
