Review by Binkley (e-mail)
This was a good, very simple, ending to a convoluted storyline. Except for the Quicks, this was essentially the fight against Superman and the race by Terrrific to finish the device he was creating. It was effective, suspenseful, and the device made enough sense that you can buy that it would work, but it had enough pseudo-science, mumbo jumbo that you weren’t trying to determine if it really would work. Ultimately, this issue totally removes every other Black Lantern, leaving only Superman left, from the story, making you wonder why they just didn’t stick to that particular story to begin with. And the Quicks, which was actually quite touching as Jesse races with the man she knows is not her father, but close enough that she gets emotionally vested in him. It was touching, making me wish there was more of them.
Except for the New Guardians, is Mr. Terrific the person to take out the most Black Lanterns in one shot? He took out the entire city, including some super powered Lanterns. Speaking of which, what happened to the other JSA Black Lanterns. Did they really “die” (have the connection to the black severed) when Damage went kaboom. I would’ve thought they would’ve come back the way all Black Lanterns come back, but we never saw any of them in this issue.
Maybe it is just me, but I don’t recall reading a scene where Black Lantern Terrific attacked Thunderbolt. Was it in the first issue? If it was, it must’ve been a brief panel that was stuck in there without much explanation so that the ending wasn’t ruined. Not that that the ending was ruined. I mean, we all knew the Black Lanterns would be defeated in some way and the heroes would be victorious. I mean, how and why Mr. Terrific knew what to do to defeat the Black Lanterns.
