Review by Binkley (e-mail)

This is essentially two different stories woven into one issue.  I think what you think of this issue may be dependent on whether you like the rogues or Barry better.  I liked the rogues story much better than Barry’s story.  The simple reason for this, I think, is that Barry’s story is tied so much into the main Blackest Night series that I don’t feel like I am getting the complete story.  It feels like bits and pieces, with scenes that appear to be lifted from panels occurring in another comic.  There is some attempt to tie in the last issue of this mini-series with the return of Solovar, but that is only one page.  It also doesn’t help that a small portion of Barry’s scenes is a fight to save a non-Flash character, Firestorm.  Plus, the constant repeat of “All Will Be Well” sounds more like someone trying to convince themselves all will be well rather than a mantra that reflects a state of mind.  In contrast, the rogues section read simply, with the various living and dead characters matching up to battle their counterparts.  It is not surprising that Captain Cold gets the spotlight; it always seemed like Johns loved to write Cold the best and given his backstory and his sister, it makes the most sense.  Johns gets the most out their brief, showing once more the heartless depths of the rogues.  The rest of the scenes are fairly typical with the dead upset at the legacy left behind by the living, although Top’s assertion that he and Weather Wizard were going to take out Cold and the rest might provide some interesting fodder for future stories.  The most intriguing scene was the arrival of Boomer to save his father.  I am curious to see what he has in mind.
