Synopsis

In Metropolis, Misfit finds herself captured, forced to fight against other metahumans in a gladiator-style ring while being kept drugged and unable to escape.  After defeating Livewire, Misfit returns to her cell to find she has a new roommate:  Black Alice.  She proceeds to steal Misfit’s power and teleports away.  Elsewhere, Oracle and the rest of the Birds Of Prey search for Misfit, with little luck.  Meanwhile, Black Alice is escaping when she overhears news that she and Misfit are related (perhaps sisters).  Shocked, she fails to realize she has been followed and is recaptured.  Later, Black Alice and Misfit are sent to the gladiator pit to fight each other.  Black Alice steals the power of Ertigan to win the fight, but refuses to finish Misfit.  Instead, Alice uses Misfit’s power to escape, then returns the power to allow Misfit to escape.  In Platinum Flats, Misfit has returned to the Birds of Prey with the knowledge she and Black Alice are sisters, meaning one (or both) of their lives has been a lie.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

Have you ever been driving on the highway and come across a scene in which you see several cars have crashed into each other and are beaten and battered beyond all recognition.  And you stare at the wreckage, fascinated by what you are witnessing, but in the back of your mind, all you can think is, how did this happen.  I had the same feeling with this issue.  Not the wreckage part; this is a great issue and far, far from being a wreck.  No, I am thinking about the Dark Side Club and seeing the New Gods in human disguises setting up their own fight club.  I am fascinated by this new status quo while at the same time wondering:  how the hell did this happen.  Between the ending of Countdown and Death of The New Gods there has been a fundamental shift in the New Gods.  And while we haven’t seen the why yet, we have now seen the what (also in this issue of The Flash) and frankly this is by far one of the more interesting ideas DC has come up with in some time.  And Bedard makes it work in this issue, giving us enough of Granny Goodness (looking remarkably like Amanda Waller) and Darkseid to whet our appetite.  Yet, Bedard understands this is the Birds of Prey, so he focuses the story on Misfit and Black Alice, continuing their relationship from earlier issues and expanding on it.  I am not quite sure where Bedard (or editorial or perhaps Simone since she created Misfit) is going with the blood-relative angle for these characters, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
