Synopsis
In the midst of trailing carjackers, Huntress gets a call from Oracle about a group of kids who unearthed a bomb planted by the Atomic Skull. Oracle wants Huntress to leave the carjackers and deal with the kids. Huntress refuses and tells Oracle to find someone else. Oracle says there is no one else. During the conversation, Huntress manages to catch up with the carjackers and subdue them. She then proceeds to the warehouse where the bomb is being kept. When she gets there, she finds a bunch of scared kids. Huntress manages to get them to defuse the bomb.

Comic books are a serialized format in which characters and stories continue from month to month, year to year, and sometimes decade to decade. Occasionally, some plots are finished and before the next plot is started, creators will write a contained story that does not have a cliffhanger. This issue is the perfect example of this. Now, if you’re reading this, I am sure the previous was nothing new to you and you are probably wondering where the hell I am going with this. Well, in a serialized format such as this, it seems incredibly strange to me that the death of Knockout would be forgotten so quickly. Last issue ended with Knockout’s death and Scandal blaming Big Barda, even though she didn’t do it. It was a good set-up. With no follow-up (although a type of follow-up occurs in Checkmate, issue #18, but it is not really connected to Birds of Prey). It is a shame, really, because I thought Bedard had managed to transition his role of writer from Gail Simone really well both in terms of continuity and in terms of style. But this issue makes me wonder where he is going with this series, other than to tie it into Countdown (which the death of Knockout does and which the next issues promises to do as well) until that series is done in 8 months.
Having said all that, this was still an enjoyable issue. I like the conversation and interplay between Huntress and Oracle and it as nice to see Huntress thoroughly kick some ass to beat the bad guys in addition to using her teacher’s background to save the day.
