Synopsis
Somewhere in Asia, a group of armed soldiers are marching to destroy the village where Dinah Lance (aka Black Canary) is training at the same place where Shiva trained. Dinah attempts to get the villagers to do something, but they all seem to accept their faith. In Metropolis, the Birds of Prey are trying to locate Prometheus who has captured Matt Thorne (aka Crime Doctor). Interrogation of a H.I.V.E. member by Shiva leads to Killer Croc, who points the way to Prometheus’ location. Meanwhile, Dinah prepares herself to meet the oncoming rush of the soldiers. She takes down the soldiers one by one and saves the village. Dinah tells Mother, her trainer, that she is leaving. Mother says she can’t, Dinah is supposed to be the next Shiva, but Dinah leaves, they will just have to train another. The Birds of Prey, in the meantime, have found Prometheus. Shiva goes in first, but Prometheus has the knowledge of 30 of the world’s best fighters and he easily defeats her and wants to know who is next.
Review by Binkley (e-mail)
“Of course, my daughter actually attempted to kill me and hang me on a hook.”
“I’m sorry to heart that.”
“Sorry? It just proves she’s an achiever.”
This book has gone a complete reversal of fortune for me and it only took three issues. The first OYL issue I was less enthused with the Dinah section and more engrossed with Shiva and the rest of the Birds of Prey. Now, the opposite is true. I found the section with Dinah thrilling in the way she dissected her training and the changes she has gone through. Her reflection on being able to determine how to kill someone while eating dinner was pretty scary. But the most interesting aspect was the fact that she knew she could not undo the knowledge she had gained. She wanted to become a better fighter, but in the end what she got was a taste of the darkness, a taste of the killing and that will change you forever. On the opposite spectrum, I grew bored with the Birds search for Prometheus; I would have liked to have seen more of Dinah and less of the rest. Although, I must admit, the sight of Shiva wearing the fish net stockings was too funny.
At one point, Prometheus states that Shiva is the third most deadliest fighter in the world. I will assume Prometheus thinks he is number one. So, who would be number two? Just so know, I doubt DC has a definitive answer. I am sure the number was picked randomly just to give people something to argue about.
