Synopsis
On a boat, Esther Maris marvels at the wonders of the ocean. Aquaman promises if she returns that night, he will show some truly wondrous sights. In Sub Diego, Anton Geist tends to Captain Marley’s wounds caused by a monstrous mutated monster that attacked the new pipeline running through the city. Meanwhile, Aquaman learns of the return of Black Manta, who has done nothing more in Sub Diego than just talk. After Aquaman confronts Black Manta, Koryak and Lorena arrive with news about Aquaman’s wife, Mera. Aquaman returns to Atlantis and finds Mera is ill. Meanwhile, Esther waits at night for Aquaman, but he never shows.

I am not entirely sure how long this current storyline is supposed to last, but I will say this issue felt a lot like the middle issue. All of the various threads from the pretty issue are continued, so there is no really starting point, but also nothing really gets resolved either, so there is no ending. Instead, the story just continues. Not that this is a bad thing. There are a lot of threads dangling around this book and it was nice to see all of them touched upon in some fashion or another (including a literal sea monkey!). I am not all that thrilled with the racial aspect of Black Manta’s appearance, but his encounter with Aquaman was handled well and I am curious to see if they really make him a water-breather (which would, I think, change his infamous helmet look and perhaps damage his marketability).
What was the deal with Tempest and Aquaman? Last I knew they were still friends or is Tempest upset that Aquaman decided not to return to Atlantis. If so, he is pretty bitter about it. Well, I guess I would be to if the King and your father figure left home to rule over a broken city. Or it could be there is something else going on that we haven’t been told about. I get the feeling there is some more going on than simply everyone being pissed that Aquaman refused to retake the crown.
How long does it take, exactly, to swim from Atlantis, which I believe is located in the Atlantic Ocean to Sub Diego, which is located in the Pacific Ocean? Is there a shortcut somewhere?
