Synopsis
The Marauder has just destroyed Aquaman’s water hand and is going in for the kill. A Navy officer tries to stop Marauder, but gets his stomach sliced open. Aquaman recovers enough to pull apart Marauder’s robotic hand before he swims the Navy officer to the surface. Meanwhile, the Marauder recovers quick enough to kill one of the Sea Devils before telling them to leave or he’ll detonate the warhead on the U.S.S. Nimitz. On the surface, Aquaman realizes and the Sea Devils devise a plan to defeat the Marauder.

Except for the one weird part, this was a very solid ending to this two-part story. The tension between Aquaman and the government official was well done as it showed they were at odds on one level, but were at least able to work together to solve the current crisis. I also liked the interaction with the Sea Devils as both Dane and Aquaman showed each other respect and they really did work together. It is always nice to see others afford Aquaman respect as the King of the Oceans, even if he is no longer the king of the ocean. And, Lorena was added to the mix during the operation, although I don’t think she really did all that much except help rescue the civilians. Still, it looks more and more like she might really become Aquagirl.
The weird part of the issue was the brief interlude with the Sea Devils and Amnundsen’s reaction to the one who died. Not necessarily her reaction at the time of the death, so much as the scene afterwards in which Dane Dorrance and Amnundsen discuss her reaction. I could understand a character building moment if I thought the Sea Devils might have a more active role in the Aquaman title, but for supporting characters, this seemed oddly placed. It also seemed oddly placed within the context of the story, especially since we don’t see Amnundsen reach the surface with Dorrance or her reflection on that moment. It seemed to be all set up with no follow through.
Any particular reason there had to be four inkers on this issue?
