Synopsis
At Meta Magazine, Vince Wolfe is given the task of writing an article on Aquaman. Since his unable to find the real Aquaman, his sister suggests he writes an article about what other people think of Aquaman. First he talks to some grade school ids, then to a few women friends of his sister, and then some firemen. Eventually, Vince returns to a friend of his sisters, who met Aquaman when he saved her life when she attempted to commit suicide. Aquaman helped her deal with her problems and allowed her to move on, a comfort she will always remember.
Review
Like the previous issue, this is another space filler until the new creative team hops on board, which luckily will be with the next issue. And like the previous issue, this was not a bad issue in the sense that it wasn’t great or good, but it also wasn’t all that bad. I liked the way Aquaman was presented in some of the stories that were told. Some were from the silver-age when he wore gloves, others from when he had the hook, and the final one with the water hand. It shows that Aquaman may change, but he has been around a long time. I also noticed that once more, the death of Aquaman’s son is presented as a defining characteristic for him as he helps someone else deal with their loss by emphasizing based on his own loss. If hadn’t just read the same thing in the previous issue, it might have been a nice read, but this time I felt a little annoyed. Essentially both fillers used the same ending.
It is a shame that after the year-long story arc with the Thirst that the editors at DC did not have another story and creative team lined up. Did Veitch leave suddenly? These past two issues offer nothing for Aquaman fans other than sitting on their hands and waiting. And waiting. Hopefully in the next issue something will actually happen. -- MRB
