Synopsis
Aquaman and Garth are swimming through the polluted waters of the Rhine looking for another sister of the Lady Of The Lake. They come to the spot, which is the also the location of a power plant dumping chemicals and waste into the waters. Using his magical hand, Aquaman opens the portal to the realm of the Rhine sister. Here the encounter the real Valhalla, where warriors battle one another with great enthusiasm, watched over the Rhine Sister, who knows she is safe so long as the Rhinegold is hidden from the eyes of men. After telling the sister of the impending danger, the alarm sounds to indicate the Thirst is near. In Atlantis, Hagen orders Dolphin and Cerdian to have an “accident” due to their connection to Garth and Aquaman. Hagen orders Tubold and Skuld to work their connubial craft. However, they are killed through Man O' War intervening in their ritual. On the waters of the Rhine, Aquaman and Garth leave the Rhine sister to battle the Thirst. But as they fight his undead soldiers, the Elbe sister under the Thirst’s control breaks the damn to the power planet. As the water drains, it reveals tons of gold. Aquaman dives into the water to stop the Elbe sister. When he emerges from the waste, he has turned gold!
Review
Go back and read the last review. I’ll wait. Okay, now that you are back, you should realize that I just did not like this issue at all. I barely liked the previous, but enjoyed some of the bits. Well, for this issue all of those bits are completely gone. What is left is just a mess. Briefly I had hope we might find some resolution to the story arc when Aquaman was fighting the Thirst, but that did not last long. So, the story continues to chug along. What is frustrating for me is that this re-boot has had some interesting things about it, but all of the stuff that I have liked have been left behind for this story of the Thirst, which does not hold my attention span at all. First of all, the Thirst does not seem like a credible opponent. I realize that the real opponent is supposed to be Aquaman and his anger, but even that has been dropped. Instead we get a weasel that is a squirrel and references to the Playboy Channel. How about some character moments? How about some introspection from Aquaman on who he is, was, and/or should be? The beginning of this story arc suggested a mystical examination of Aquaman, but now it has turned into the villain of the weak. (sorry, bad pun). -- MRB
